Wentworth Miller had never played the Resident Evil games or even watched the Resident Evil movies until he was cast to play Chris Redfield in the upcoming Resident Evil: Afterlife film, opening in theaters on September 10.
However, Miller told Shock at an Afterlife press event at Comic-Con 2010 that he caught up pretty quickly, especially after he learned just how important Chris Redfield is to the franchise as a whole.
“I wanted to do my research and what the fan expectation might be and respect what was already out there in terms of the mythology,” Miller said. “So there was a lot of research online and going to fan sites, so I had to educate myself. [The character] has to make sense as a whole and not as a standalone part. This thing is far down the track and the job I have is to jump on and become a seamless part of this larger whole.” (more…)
Zombies of Comic-Con 2010 unite for the panel and footage screening for Resident Evil: Afterlife, the fourth film in the action/horror franchise, this time coming at us in 3D.
Resident Evil: Afterlife will be blowing up 3D screens this Fall, and fans of the horror/action franchise will be psyched to see it back in theaters. Hall H at Comic-Con 2010 was ready to get a look at the “revolutionary” 3D footage from film.
Besides the footage, a panel with Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller and director Paul WS Anderson is enough to get fanboys at the ‘Con excited. (more…)
Wentworth Miller spent all four years of his stint on Prison Break convincing himself he wasn’t a writer, but after the show wrapped, he spent four weeks writing the script Stoker — a drama about a young girl and her mysterious, potentially murderous uncle — and managed to attach A-list talent like Jodie Foster and Carey Mulligan. At Comic-Con, he told Movieline how it happened (and which Alfred Hitchcock movie Stoker is an homage to). (more…)
Last December, the producers of RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE granted FANGORIA exclusive access to the Toronto set of the fourth chapter in their action/horror franchise, derived from the best-selling Capcom video games. Over the next 10 weeks, right up to AFTERLIFE’s September 10 release from Screen Gems, Fangoria.com will be presenting a series of one-on-one interviews with the movie’s cast and crew.
Written and directed by film series originator Paul W.S. Anderson, AFTERLIFE once again stars Milla Jovovich (Anderson’s wife) as mysterious heroine Alice, who teams with a small group of postapocalyptic survivors in a world overrun with zombies, monsters and agents of the nefarious Umbrella Corporation. Not since SHOCK WAVES have so many underwater zombies been slogging through murky water to menace the living. Here on the Toronto set of RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE, a group of soggy ghouls have emerged from a flooded stairwell at the LA County Correctional Facility, where film series heroine Alice (Milla Jovovich) and her allies (including game hero Chris Redfield, played by PRISON BREAK’s Wentworth Miller) are holed up and scrounging for weapons. According to APOCALYPSE producer Don Carmody, the scene being shot takes place in the “end of the middle third of the film,” and Fango is here to witness some killer undead action.
Said action takes a noisy turn, however, necessitating the distribution of earplugs to all those observing when Miller fires dual guns at a ghoul. The zombie screams and lunges at the human survivors, before flipping completely backward and into the water after being aerated by bullets. Fellow stunt creature Danny Lima observes his brethren’s abuse.
“My job has already been done,” Lima tells Fango. “I was hooked up to a cable, heading underwater, and on a cue that I couldn’t hear—I had to basically feel my way along—I came flying up behind one of the actresses and grabbed her, and then pulled her stuntperson into the water. Today’s one of the highlights. Hopefully they’ll use it in the trailer.” (more…)
Last November, I got to visit the set of Resident Evil: Afterlife when the movie was filming in Toronto. I was there with a few other online journalists and we got to watch some filming and also interview the cast. Overall it was a great set visit and you can read my report here. Anyway, late in the day we got to sit down with Wentworth Miller to talk about playing Chris Redfield. He told us what he did to prepare for the movie, the kind of research he did online, and how his character is different than the video game. While the interview wasn’t a long one, it was very informative. (more…)
Wentworth Miller (Prison Break) plays Redfield, a game character who fans have been waiting to see on the big screen for years.
“They say that ignorance is bliss, and I think the good news is that I went into this very much a clean slate,” says Miller. “I hadn’t seen any of the movies, I never played the videogames. … I’d never heard the name Chris Redfield, but I was quickly made aware that there was a rather large fan base out there for the movies and the videogames and that this character held a special place in people’s hearts and minds. And so I of course wanted to proceed with respect.”
Miller did some research and found that there are several different interpretations of the character, including Anderson’s take on Chris in the script for the film.
“I had the images I saw online,” says the actor. “I had what I saw in the videogames, and of course I had Paul’s script. And Paul’s the fountainhead as far as I’m concerned. … The Chris Redfield that he introduces is not only someone who’s been through a lot of serious crap, but is now emerging from a particularly dire set of circumstances. So I had to figure out how to make all of those different influences work and marry that to what I bring as an actor to the table. And it has to be, in a sense, at the end of the day my Chris Redfield.”
And yet, it’s also the fans’ Chris Redfield, says Miller. When it came time to put together the character’s wardrobe, Miller and the filmmakers harvested what was already out there for Chris.
“As far as what we came up with, it’s very much representative of many of those online influences,” he says. “He’s got grey military fatigues, and we paid particular attention to what we call his gack — the kneepads, the belts, the sword, the back gear, the plate, the little flashlight on the belt.”

Is it too cheesy to begin this article with “The future is now”?
That’s the thought I had while sitting behind one of two flat-screen monitors on the set of RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE in Toronto late last year. Normally, a playback monitor is a small, unimpressive, little t.v.; reminds you of that small t.v. you used to have in your kitchen. (Well, reminds me of that, anyway.) But not on this movie. On this movie, I was in a separate room, away from the main set, watching the playback on a monitor while wearing 3D glasses, and seeing it all in 3D. No, this isn’t horrible 3D you’re used to watching at home, where it’s blurry and it hurts your eyes. This really was 3D: crisp and clear and protruding from the screen. I could not believe it, and I couldn’t help but think: “When are we gonna start putting these in our homes?” Turns out, not too far from now… This was, of course, before AVATAR was released and blew everyone away; it was also before ESPN, The Discovery Channel, and others announced they were creating their own 3D stations. Back in November 2009, this seemed like “the world of tomorrow” type stuff. Now, in April 2010, it’s almost old news already. (more…)
